According to Brooklyn Eagle, Madiba, the only South African restaurant in Brooklyn, will host next week what promises to be a poignant evening of South African literature, music, and cuisine. The program, which will begin at 7 p.m. on June 5, will provide an enriching and intimate view on a country that has faced great adversity in its struggle for social justice.
Boston-based writer Neville Frankel will appear at Madiba to read from his new thriller “Bloodlines.” Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Frankel immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. Covering five decades, his book tells the heartbreaking story of a family ruptured by apartheid.
Brooklyn-born vocalist Nedelka F. Prescod will also be featured at Wednesday’s event. Her band, the Earth Tones, is a collaboration between New England Conservatory students and alumni.
Located in Fort Greene, Madiba is rooted in the tradition of the Shebeen, conjuring informal dining halls where South Africans congregate after the work day to dine and laugh together. Madiba’s menu is inspired by African, European, and Indian cuisines.
The June 5 event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Madiba is located at 195 DeKalb Ave. in Fort Greene. The event is free, but for $50 you may purchase a 3-course South African dinner and a sign copy of Frankel’s “Bloodlines.”
