Brooklyn Book Briefs: Jan. 28

According to Brooklyn Eagle, Renowned English bassist and singer Peter Hook will appear at DUMBO’s powerHouse Arena tonight, Jan. 28, to celebrate the release of “Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division.” In his book, to be released tomorrow, Jan. 29, Hook offers an in-depth exploration of some of the post-punk musicians and bass guitar melodies that came to define an era.  His book includes previously unseen photographs and chronicles the intricacies of his relationships with his band mates.  Pitchfork Editor and metal columnist Brandon Stosuy will appear in conversation with Hook.

The event will begin at 7pm. powerHouse Arena is located at 37 Main St. in DUMBO

Writer and journalist Rebecca Dana will appear at BookCourt this evening, Jan. 28, to discuss her new book “Jujitsu Rabbi and the Godless Blonde.” Dana, who moved to New York after college and immersed herself in New York’s so-called glamorous party scene, soon became disenchanted with this world and found herself caught up in Brooklyn’s Lubavitch community. In her book, she offers readers a glimpse into her experience living with Cosmo, a Russian rabbi who practices jujitsu.

Dana has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Observer, Slate, The Washington Post, and The Daily Beast, among other publications. “Jujitsu Rabbi and the Godless Blonde” was released last Thursday, Jan. 24.

The event will begin at 7pm. BookCourt is located at 163 Court St. in Cobble Hill.

This evening, Jan. 28, Greenpoint’s WORD Bookstore, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, and Akashic Books present musician Ian Svenonius, who will discuss and celebrate his new book “Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock ‘n’ Roll Group.” Jason Diamond of Vol. 1 Brooklyn will introduce the event, after which Svenonius present his book by channeling the spirits of deceased rock stars, highlighting some key points in the evolution of rock music.

The event will begin at 7pm. WORD is located at 126 Franklin St. in Greenpoint.
