Daily Bookmark: “The Measure of his Song” is a tribute to Brooklyn’s favorite birthday boy

How did you celebrate the 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman’s birth? It was back in May, and we hope you didn’t forget, given Whitman is one of the most influential poets in the American canon, not to mention the erstwhile editor of the Brooklyn Eagle. Not to worry, because there’s still time to pick up a copy of “The Measure of his Song,” a new edition of poetic Whitman tributes, on sale now from Holy Cow! Press.

In the monumental anthology, readers will find poems and essays from over 100 contributors, a gallery of Whitman photographs and an extensive bibliography of parodies, lectures, letters and recollections analyzing Whitman’s life and contending with his legacy. With tributes from Ezra Pound, Frederico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda, Allen Ginsberg, Adrienne Rich, D.H. Lawrence, H.D. Thoreau and others, it’s clear Whitman fulfilled his wish to be read by audiences in “ages hence” and defined by “poets to come.”

“The Measure of his Song” is the third edition of a popular Whitman anthology first compiled in 1981. The latest version was edited by Jim Perlman, Dan Campion and Ed Folsom, one of the world’s foremost Whitman scholars and the editor of “Walt Whitman Quarterly Review,” an online open-access journal for Whitman studies.
