powerHouse kicks off the New Year with three exciting events this week

powerHouse is pumped for the new year, hosting a slew of exciting events this January.

Tomorrow, January 8, stop by to hear journalist Jonathan Katz speak about his experience as the only full-time American correspondent present in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake. Katz’s new book, The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster chronicles the post-earthquake year he spent in Haiti, documenting the disaster’s implications on Haitians and their everyday lives. Katz closely follows relief efforts as well, exposing complications that arose when money and aid were not put to best use.  His book is both an account of how Haitians fared in the aftermath of the earthquake and of how leaders and foreigners approached the disaster.

The following evening, January 9, join local author Grant Ginder as he celebrates the launch of Driver’s Education. On sale January 8, this humorous novel traces the stories and intersections of three generations of the McPhee family as they unfold during a road trip. David Lipsky, contributing editor of Rolling Stone, will join Ginder in conversation.

On Friday, January 11, John Holmstrom, co-founder and editor of Punk Magazine, will appear to discuss The Best of Punk Magazine — an anthology of the groundbreaking magazine that aligned with American counterculture in the ’70s. Founded in 1976, Punk exploded in the underground music scene, selling out across the US and UK, and boosting the success of each musician it featured. Beyond promoting music, Punk offered space and publicity for photographers, writers, and cartoonists. Holmstrom’s new anthology, which compiles the best pages of the publication, includes a “lost issue,” interviews with The Ramones and other bands, and cartoons by Holmstrom himself, among other exciting features. The event will include live music and special guests.

Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s events will begin at 7pm, while Friday’s event begins at 6pm. powerHouse is located at 37 Main Street in DUMBO.
