Daily Bookmark: New comics anthology paints transgender life in vivid color

In “We’re Still Here,” new anthology of comics written, drawn and edited entirely by transgender creators, Tara Avery and Jeanne Thornton have compiled 55 stories with genres ranging from nonfiction to fantasy, and visual essays to memoir.

With over 300 pages filled with gorgeous art, heartbreaking tales and whimsical anecdotes, and characters like a group of trans men at a Japanese bar to discuss the horrors of Donald Trump, or a group of trans women piloting gigantic robots, “We’re Still Here” announces that trans comics have been making art for some time, and they’re not going anywhere soon.

The first-of-its-kind anthology was published by Stacked Deck Press after raising more than $65,000 from a Kickstarter campaign, which had an original goal of $17,000. Jeanne Thornton, who contributed to and edited the anthology, is a Brooklyn resident. Her 2012 debut novel “The Dream of Doctor Bantam” was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award.
